Reading My Own Books

I have a serious problem, and I blame it all on book blogging. I never used to buy books (I had strict rules for purchasing--had to have already read, and plan to re-read), and now I can't seem to help myself. My book shelves are now double stacked and I'm moving across the ocean in July. We have a limited amount of weight that we can take, and as you all know (from lugging them in your purses) they are HEAVY. (We also bought a piano while here so that's part of the problem. Whoops.)

Enter Michelle of my books. my life. She mentioned on her blog that she was going to read her own books through the end of the year, and made the lovely button above (I'm a sucker for activities with cool buttons). So here I am, committing to read my own books through the end of the year. I will not be checking out any more books from the library (with the exception of audio). I will try to get through some of the books on my overstuffed shelves (before they topple off and bury alive one of my children). This way the books that I don't intend to re-read can find a new home.

I have some good ones on the shelf that I'm really looking forward to reading.

What are your shelves like? I don't think I'm the only one with this problem. Please tell me I'm not alone!

  1. Good luck! I agree it is difficult. I wish I had stuck to my rule of only allowing a book in the house if I was going to read immediately...

    1. Care, it is tough controlling the buying. All the books are so lovely and I have such great intentions when I bring them home. Thanks for the good luck sentiment. I think I will need it to resist the siren call of the library.

  2. Yay! I'm not making much progress in my own books but it is nice to not feel the pressure of review and library books at the moment. Good luck getting through your stack!

    1. Thanks for letting me join you, Michelle. I don't always realize how much the due dates of my library books affect my reading. It's stressful to have to read on a timeline and it means I don't always get to read what I want, when I want. I think I'm going to enjoy the next couple of months.

  3. You're not alone--although I have been better this year with the exception of book club and readalong books. Except those are the only books I've been reading so... ;) But lately cookbooks is where I'm getting myself into trouble. Just can't resist them.

Look forward to seeing what you decide to read!

    1. I've never really been a cookbook buyer, but my husband likes to buy them (weird). He's totally obsessed with Jamie Oliver right now so I have three of his cookbooks out from the library. Do you have any of his? I do like his style--really healthy, fresh ingredients, and pretty simple.

    2. I'll have to check some of them out. We loved Food Revolution when it was on TV but haven't tried any recipes from him yet.

    3. Trish, we've tried a couple of Jamie Oliver's recipes with success. They're so easy, healthy, and they really taste delicious.

  4. That is an AWESOME button! It looks ominous … like if you don't read your own books, they will fall on you. This is always a good idea to work on … and I think every book blogger has a similar problem!

    1. It is a pretty cool button. Now that you mention how ominous it is, it's all I can see. It's perfect because the books on my shelves look like they might topple and cause some serious damage. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem.

  5. Great button! And you're not alone. I have to have some kind of rule now too, it's getting ridiculous. Even I can see that I can't maintain this kind of book buying behavior! Where are you moving to?

    1. Joanna, I do need to set up more strict rules for what comes into my house!

We're moving back home to the US. We're from San Diego and my husband was just in Scotland for his company to set up a new office. His assignment will be up this summer.

  6. You are definitely not alone! My bookshelves are out of control. I may have to try this as well.

    1. Join us! It'll be fun. I'm going to be strict about it through the end of the year, then maybe make a rule to read one of my own for every library book I read. We'll see if I can keep it up!

  7. This is a wonderful event, Kristi! Hope you have fun reading your own books. I have my shelf stacked with unread books too. A few months back I stopped buying books and tried reading what I already have. But in the past few weeks the book-buying bug has bit me again. I am ordering a few more books today and I am feeling guilty about it, but I am not able to resist them. So, you are definitely not alone. That is a wonderful button.

  8. I like buttons too! I joined the "Mt TBR Challenge" this year in an effort to only read my own books but I only read 50% of the target. I think it stemmed the flow of books into the house but has not done much to reduce that TBR pile! this year stabilization, next year reduction!

  9. Most of my books are in boxes in my basement because I read almost exclusively on my e-reader now. My bookshelves are all children's literature. I do miss my traditional paper books on occasion, though, and there are certain books I want to read as a real book and not as a computer file. I love the look of an overstuffed bookshelf!
